# Podcast citation generator

Fill in a few details about the episode and you get the APA, MLA and Chicago citation right away.

## How to use it

1. Look up the episode you want to cite. The show's own website is the best place, but Apple Podcasts or Spotify is fine too.
2. Fill in the host names like you normally would, so first name first. You don't have to turn them into initials for APA, I take care of that.
3. The episode number and production company are optional. Add them if you can find them.
4. Copy the citation in the style you need and paste it in your paper. The italics will stay when you paste into Word or Google Docs.

## How APA, MLA and Chicago differ

If you have ever looked at all three side by side, you probably noticed they need almost the same information. The difference is mostly in the order and in small details like how you write a name or a date. Let me walk you through each one.

APA 7 is used a lot in psychology, education and other social sciences. In APA the date comes right after the hosts, since APA cares a lot about when something was published. Hosts are written as last name plus initials and then (Host) or (Hosts). The podcast name is in italics and the episode title is not. Also, you don't put a period after the URL.

MLA 9 is what most students in English and the humanities use. You flip only the first host's name and then write "host". The episode title goes between quotation marks. For the date you write the day first and shorten the month, so 5 Mar. 2024. You leave out the https:// of the link, and you can add the date you listened to it at the end.

Chicago (notes and bibliography) is popular in history. A Chicago bibliography entry looks a lot like MLA. The main difference is the date, which you write as March 5, 2024, and the link keeps the https://. If you need a footnote too, it uses the same information but the first host's name is in normal order and the parts are separated with commas.

## Capital letters in episode titles

One thing to keep in mind is that the generator does not change your capital letters. APA uses sentence case for episode titles, which means you only capitalize the first word, names and the first word after a colon. MLA and Chicago use title case, so most words start with a capital letter. So if you copy all three, check the capitals in the one that doesn't match how you typed it.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I cite a podcast with more than one host?

Just add a field for every host. APA lists up to 20 names with an ampersand (&) before the last one. MLA only names the first host and writes et al. if there are three or more. Chicago lists up to ten hosts in the bibliography.

### What if the episode has no host listed?

You can leave the host field empty. The citation will then start with the title of the episode.

### Do I need the episode number?

No, a lot of podcasts don't even number their episodes. If yours does, APA puts it after the title like (No. 42) and MLA and Chicago write episode 42.

### Which link should I use?

The best link is the page of the episode on the website of the show. If there isn't one, a link to Apple Podcasts, Spotify or YouTube works too. I wouldn't link to the MP3 file itself.

### Does this tool save what I type?

No, it doesn't save anything. It all happens in your browser and nothing is sent to a server, so when you reload the page the form is empty again.
