# White, pink and brown noise generator

Listen to white, pink or brown noise on this page, or download it as a WAV file.

## How to use it

1. Pick white, pink or brown noise.
2. Press Play and turn up the volume slowly. White noise can be pretty harsh when it's loud.
3. If you want to keep it, pick a length between 10 seconds and 10 minutes and click Download WAV.

## White, pink and brown noise

All three are random sounds. What makes them different is how much energy there is in the low and high frequencies, and you hear that as a brighter or darker sound.

White noise has the same energy at every frequency. Our ears pick up high sounds more easily, so to us it sounds like a hiss, a bit like a radio that's between two stations. It's often used to test speakers and other electronics.

Pink noise gets 3 dB quieter every time the frequency doubles, so each octave has the same energy. It sounds softer than white noise, more like rain. Sound engineers use it to set levels and to tune speakers for a room.

Brown noise drops 6 dB per octave, so most of the sound is in the low end. It sounds like a low rumble, or like sitting inside a plane. A lot of people find it the nicest noise to focus or sleep with. Fun fact, the name comes from Brownian motion and not from the color brown.

## How the noise is made

White noise is just a long list of random numbers. For pink noise those numbers go through Paul Kellet's filter, which is seven small filters added together that follow the 3 dB per octave curve really well. Brown noise adds every new random number to the one before it, and slowly pulls the total back to zero so it doesn't drift.

Every download is new random noise at 44.1 kHz, 16-bit, mono. The last tenth of a second fades into the start of the file, so when you put it on repeat you won't hear a click.

## Noise in podcast editing

When you cut out a cough or a long pause and leave complete digital silence, it sounds like the audio dropped out. That's why editors fill those gaps with room tone, which is a few seconds of the room recorded while nobody is talking. If you forgot to record it, a very quiet layer of pink or brown noise around -50 dBFS can hide the cuts. My tip is to set it a bit lower than you think.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which noise is best for sleep?

Nobody has proven that one is better than the others. Pink noise has had the most research and a few small studies linked it to deeper sleep, but a lot of people like brown noise more because it doesn't hiss. Try each one for a few minutes at a low volume and keep the one you stop noticing.

### Why is the download limited to 10 minutes?

Your browser builds the whole file in its memory. Ten minutes of 16-bit mono at 44.1 kHz is about 53 MB, which a phone can still handle. If you want to listen longer, just put the file on repeat. You won't hear where it loops.

### Can I use the noise in my videos or podcast?

Yes. The file is made on your own device, so you can use it wherever you want and you don't have to credit anyone.

### Does the noise keep playing if I switch tabs?

On a computer it does. On a phone the sound usually stops when the screen locks, so download the WAV if you want to play it all night.

### What format is the download?

It's a WAV file in 16-bit, 44.1 kHz, mono, so every audio editor can open it. If you want a smaller file you can convert it to MP3 afterwards.
